I'm really interested in getting a DepthSense 311 because of the 15cm near mode. Reading through the datasheet though it says that the resolution of the depth image is just 160x120 which seems a bit small, especially when compared with the 640x480ish depth images from a competing product.

Is there any option to get a higher resolution depth image when in near mode? And if it isn't possible at the moment is there a possibility that the drivers/firmware can be updated to allow this at some point in the future?

Dear ABROUN ,

thank you for your interest.
Inside the camera there are 2 sensors: one 2D sensor(RGB video ) and one 3D sensor .
The maximum resolution of 3D sensor is 160*120 . The resolution of 2D Video camera is 640*480 (VGA)
For the 3D sensor major resolution does not mean major accuracy in tracking.
Indeed for close range interaction you are so close to the camera ( around  50cm) that the finger are tracked very very well.
At the moment we have not any upgrade plan for 3D camera resolution for the  DS311

Just to add some more information:

DS311 in CI mode is tracking close interaction within the range between 25cm-1,5cm
DS311 in standard mode is tracking 1,5 -4.5 m
FOV 57(h)x42(v)

Currently we are workign on having next version of only CI cameras which will have depth resolution 320(h)x240(v), it would be possible to track objects at 10-25 cm.

Hi Michele,

I too am interested in the near-mode capabilities of the depthsense camera. I am looking into using it for behavior detection in rats at distances of about 25 to 50cm. Since rats are small, I was wondering what the 3D spatial resolution of the camera is (i.e., spacial resolution in cm at a specified distance). The datasheet for the DS311 says it is 3 cm at a distance of 2 m, but it didn't look like that was for the near mode. Is it the same or is the resolution better in the near mode? Thanks a lot,

Hi,

 

for DS311 in CI mode, the depth resolution is:

 @15cm = 3mm

@1 meter = 4 mm

@1.5meters = 7mm
